Kim Komando

Sunday, March 28th, 2010

A site called komando.com linked to Popling on Friday and sent so much traffic to the site, I didn’t have time to thank them. I immediately went into tech support mode helping out all the new users who were signing up. Thanks to their great feedback, that process is now much easier.

Komando is the site of radio talk show host and author Kim Komando who seems to be doing a great job of help ordinary people be better geeks. In addition to her radio show, her site features a daily digital downloads, cool sites and videos, news and more.

You should go check it out.

Thanks for the traffic Kim and team!

New – Remember Me

Sunday, March 28th, 2010

New feature for the web interface to Popling’s ‘flash card‘ engine…

Remember Me logins!

Check remember me and log in to have your login set for a few weeks. This means web interface users won’t have to keep logging in to see your flash cards. It’s been my pet peeve with the site for some time now, and I’m happy to have put it behind us.

Yay!

Traffic!

Friday, March 26th, 2010

Helloooooo to all the new visitors to Popling.net! There are so many of you we are having a hard time keeping up! Our mail server is a little backlogged, so your registration verification emails may take a while to get to you.
We’re working hard to get this fixed.

Also, the site may be a little slow due to all the traffic. Don’t worry though, the little hamster is going as fast as it can.

New Feature: Reverse Cards

Friday, March 26th, 2010

Jamble’s awesome set of cards finally prompted me to add a new feature: card reversal.

Jamble’s cards are Spanish > English, but personally, I like to learn from English > Spanish. I find having to type the Spanish word in the retention dialog really helps me remember the word.

To reverse a set of flash cards, subscribe to the Popling and select ‘edit preferences’, then check the ‘Reverse’ button.

Jamble Rocks

Friday, March 26th, 2010

I just wanted to make a quick call out to brand new user Jamble who created 10 great flash card sets for users who want to Learn Spanish. The first card in one of the first poplings is ‘Ligar’ which is spanish for to flirt. That’s a great way to start in my book. :D

Thanks Jamble, your reward for being awesome is a free Pro account!

You can find all of Jamble’s flash card sets here:

Friday, March 26th, 2010

Hi all, a small bug caused the learn page loose retention requirements after cards had been reviewed 1 time. The bug is now fixed.

This should have only affected firefox add-on users and users of the web interface.

Popling on LifeHacker and Download Squad

Thursday, March 25th, 2010

Popling was been featured on LifeHacker yesterday, via a link on downloadsquad.com. That’s to both of those sites for all the traffic!

For all you geeks, the write-ups yesterday brought in about 1,200 new sign ups on 3,300 to 4,000 unique visitors. That’s a pretty nifty conversion rate, if I do say so myself. :D

I would like to extend a special thanks to all the new pro users for supporting the service. I hope you all find the extra features are worth the $20.

Tip for Learning Kanji Flashcards

Thursday, March 25th, 2010

Users learning Kanji need big type sizes to see the characters clearly. This is possible in the Popling desktop app preferences:

Click the gear icon (app preferences) in the top right corner
In the preferences pane, find the ‘theme’ drop down and select the ‘large vocab’ theme

That should increase the size enough to help you see characters correctly.

If enough people request this feature, I can add it to the web interface as well.

- Happy learning!
